Stacy D. Flood with Christina Clancy

We are utterly delighted to be helping launch a wonderful new writer - and his memorably powerful first book into the word this evening, as Seattle’s Stacy D. Flood gives us his riveting novella, The Salt Fields (Lanternfish Press). Billed as a novella, meaning shorter in length than what are generally deemed to be novels, this book packs more story, more mythically-driven resonance and intensity than many novels several times longer than this. Back in a certain day, a man named Minister Peters boards a train in South Carolina that is bound for the north, haunted by the deaths of his nearest and dearest, and then to be haunted by what ensues over the course of his journey north. We can’t tell you how many levels this book works on - atmospherically lush, rich, evocative of sounds, rhythms, smells, tensions afoot. Time takes on strange dimension, too. This early praise is just the beginning.

"The Salt Fields is a beautiful and powerful novella . . . with lyrical prose that had me spellbound from the first few sentences." —Edan Lepucki. "A riveting story that mystifies even as more and more is revealed." —Siel Ju.

Originally from Buffalo, Stacy D. Flood has been writing and performing his work here in Seattle for some years. Now he gets to do so with this singular book. Joining Stacy Flood in conversation this evening is fiction writer Christina Clancy, author of The Second Home and the forthcoming (July) Shoulder Season. Of The Salt Fields, she notes, “The Salt Fields is a gem--the kind of book you'll want to underline, dog-ear, study, teach, and beg your friends to read, and Flood is a writer to watch.” Amen.
