Cody arrived in Seattle via train in 2003, and has been in the habit of accruing library fines ever since. He's also a big-time Maggie Nelson devotee, and loves the subtle way spring crawls into Seattle.

Rosenberg's debut novel Confessions of the Fox is a complete delight! It's essentially a multilayered story that transcends and blends genres at the level of Maggie Nelson. It also brings into question the borders of linear time and space. The book is structured as an annotated manuscript documenting the exploits of transgender folk legend "Jack" and his girlfriend during England's plague years. The annotator's "voice" is broadcast via a running series of footnotes (part-academic, part-diary), which Rosenberg executes with wit, intelligence, and creativity. It reads like a literary ritual, and is emphatically queer and trans-centric, with adventurous, endearing, and permeable characters. This book is sure to be included in future literary canons.

If you're a word-nerd, fascinated by etymology and/or lexicography, or simply a writer, you need to read this book. Simon Winchester's meticulously researched book lays out the elongated campaign and tedious process that yielded the notorious Oxford English Dictionary (OED). He also outlines the histories of previous attempts at a dictionary, however incomplete, which coalesce into a mission for a dictionary that was of maximum use to its user(s), and that served as more than simply a catalog of definitions. We also learn of the life history of rarely named literary hero Dr. W. C. Minor, an eccentric bibliophile, who was vital to the making of the OED. Equal parts true crime, biography, and historical document, this empathetic story is fascinating and a testament to the collective work of the team, a few in particular, who created the most comprehensive survey of the English language.

Saturated with movement, passion, and wit, Georgiou's second book of poems is like an encyclopedia, or a human-shaped atlas. She deftly crafts gorgeous and embodied poems that communicate by way of an interesting array of structures such as footnotes, questionnaires, and columns. Reads with the depth of a love letter and the perspective of a periscope; this is a fantastic and deeply moving homage to the rainbow of immigrants' possibilities.
