Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography Cover Image

Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Ecco - September 28th, 2021

To this stranded Midwestern teen, Anthony Bourdain's Travel Channel series, No Reservations, was gospel; I tuned in more than I went to church. His television programs and his writing opened doors to parts of the world I knew nothing about- each local dish approached with reverence (or once in a while, painfully acerbic wit)- the foreign dialects welcoming like cathedral bells. His death naturally leaves one wanting more; this oral biography fills in some of those blanks without descending into mere hagiography, in the process rounding out some of the sharper edges of a singularly charismatic, cultural Prometheus.- Brendan

Discourse on Colonialism Cover Image
$16.00
ISBN: 9781583670255
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Monthly Review Press - January 1st, 2001

Many of our social problems appear intreatable to us as a result of our refusal or inability to recognize that our society is born out of and tendentially reproduces colonial violence. It's not that Western society is an otherwise healthy culture that indulges in a morally repugnant colonialism that is nevertheless peripheral to it, but that a colonial society such as the West is sick to its core. Césaire's manifesto is a fascinating document of some of the anitcolonial struggles of the middle 20th century, but one that contains the potential to reorient our struggles in the 21st. For anyone who wants to better understand what we are fighting against. -Sam

Casey Peabody is having a hard year. Her mother just died, her waitressing job is making her miserable, and she’s drowning in student debt. Oh, and she’s barely making progress on her novel. In Casey Peabody, Lily King has created one of the most well-drawn characters I’ve read in recent memory. Watching Casey struggle to make sense of her life and the people in it will offer catharsis to anyone who feels like their path forward hasn’t always been clear. When I finished this book, I had to resist the urge to start it over right away. -Laura

Although Little Bear’s excitement for Christmas morning borders on psychotic, the scenes (and scents!) in Scarry's warmly illustrated book are so evocative of those last few hours of Christmas Eve, they've taken the place of my own memories. All that's missing is the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Album, a secondhand creche and some reindeer food spilled all over the kitchen floor. The Sweet Smell of Christmas delights just as much today as it did when it was originally published in 1970- although these days Little Bear wants cash money and a PS5 instead of a trumpet and a baseball bat, and Father Bear mercifully doesn't smoke his pipe in the house anymore.-Brendan

Published: Duke University Press - June 8th, 2015

On one level, this is a history of the Caribbean (with significant detours through China, India, and Hong Kong) where peoples of the four titular continents (Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas) were in various and profoundly unequal ways brought into social relations with one another. But on another level, it's a book about words and paperwork and documents, the vast archive of writing and records these various encounters produce which made them intelligible to us in the very specific ways they are. Lowe's project's hope is to explore the ways in which the colonial archive and the disciplinary apparatuses through which we study the past conspire to make so much of the past so difficult to see and how we might alert ourselves to see through them. For anyone interested in the fraught relationships between our past and present. -Sam
