Liz

Liz flew to Seattle to escape the humidity, bugs, and strange humanoids in Florida. She loves animals of all kinds and refuses to choose a side in the dogs vs. cats rivalry. Her favorite reading materials are middle grade fantasy/science fiction and picture books, but she'll read grown-up books too, if they make her cry. She spends her free time painting, hiking with her dog and husband, reading tarot for her cats, and baking sweets for her co-workers.

This book is absolutely breathtaking! I found myself lingering on each page, wanting to take in every detail but so excited to see what came next. The touches of dark humor are perfectly executed, and the lesson is one that adults and children alike should remember.

Two young sisters are torn from what is now Ghana, one married off to a white slave trader and the other sold into slavery. The chapters alternate between sisters, each telling the story of the following generation until present day. Heart-wrenching but hopeful, this one will stay with you long past the finish.

You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain Cover Image
By Phoebe Robinson, Jessica Williams (Foreword by)
$16.00

Published: Plume - October 4th, 2016

In her book debut, comedian, podcast host, actress, and writer Phoebe Robinson serves well-timed, hilarious insight into the daily micro-aggressions faced by black women in "postracial" America. Packed with sharp wit and endless pop-culture references, Robinson's essays are a must-read for anyone wanting to get more woke and be a better ally. She covers the NFL's (mis)treatment of women, misogynistic casting calls, and, of course, prejudices against black hair. My favorite section is a series of letters addressed to her toddler niece, in which she gives advice on the little one's future struggles as a biracial woman. Read this ASAP!

Meet the four clans of wild cats: ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan. They are the Warriors! In this first book of the first series, we follow a kittypet named Rusty who ventures into the forest, ends up joining powerful ThunderClan, and gains his warrior name, Fireheart. These tails (tales! Ha, sorry...) have been some of my favorite stories since I was a child, and I would recommend them to anyone who loves animals and fantasy. With five complete sub-series, a sixth in progress, and multiple stand-alone titles, there is plenty to explore in the Warriors world, but the adventures begin here!

Great Britain is ruled by powerful magicians who summon demons to do their bidding. 11-year-old Nathaniel is apprenticed to magician Simon Lovelace, an unforgiving master who humiliates him at a large government meeting. To exact revenge, Nathaniel masters an advanced spell and summons Bartimaeus, a super snarky, 5,000-year-old djinni. However, Bartimaeus learns Nathaniel's true name, so he is not completely under the boy's control! This humorous adventure is packed with witty banter and delightfully lacking in romance. I highly recommend the whole trilogy!

We know all dogs go to heaven, but what is it like? Delicious biscuits, plenty of space to run, and lots of children to play with, of course! This is a touching story of what happens when our beloved companions pass away. With brightly painted illustrations and lyrical rhymes, this book makes a comforting gift for dog lovers of any age, especially those grieving a loss.

This is a fantastic, dark tale of the haves vs. the have-nots, and it brings up very timely points about race, power, and growing up. Taj is a fierce, often selfless young man with whom I draw a lot of parallels, but I want to be more like him in many ways. The ending had me tearing my hair out. I need the next book, like, yesterday!

This book was originally published in 1975, but it's still relevant today—perhaps even more so. It's a hopeful look at what our future could be, a balm to soothe the tired optimists. It's not a perfect vision, but what is? This is the kind of future I want to look forward to.

This may be fiction, but the struggles faced by Shirin are reflective of the author's own experiences. Brutally honest and utterly heart-wrenching, I hope this book helps readers to be more empathetic. We need to do better at truly listening to the voices of those whom society deems "lesser than;" this is one of those voices.

This is a fascinating, respectful exploration of death and burial rituals around the world, from the curious to the profound. It makes one wonder at American practices. Doesn't it seem clinical and impersonal to immediately snatch the dead away from their loved ones and pump them full of chemicals? It sure does to me.

The best stories are utterly transportive, immediately engrossing, and full of complex, believable characters. This one hits it out of the park from page 1! Ted and Amanda are worth rooting for, despite their flaws. The pacing here is perfect - not too slow or fast - and the inclusion of some adorable goslings really cinched this one for me. 10/10!
